Massage Therapy

Massage or Bodyworks?
Massage has been recognized for centuries as a means of achieving relaxation, restoring circulation within the blood and lymphatic systems, improving energy and promoting health. Massage involves sliding the hands over the client's body usually with oil at a light or deep pressure. It is soothing and relaxing and helps relieve stress.

Bodywork is not massage. Although both are therapeutic, bodywork is different modality involving moving deeper into muscles and their covering fascia to realign them more to their natural shapes and functions.

As a result of injuries, poor posture and psychological stresses, the body armors itself with stiffness, chronic diseases, inhibited breathing and spinal misalignment.

Bodywork targets muscular pain by focusing deeper pressure on specific areas, aiming at a permanent solution for chronic pain and tension.

Dorothy employs a combination of deep tissue bodywork followed by massage for clients suffering from chronic muscular pain/weakness, stress, or chronic spinal misalignment, and shiatsu for clients dealing with major diseases.

Therapeutic Modalities

  • Neuromuscular/Trigger Point Therapy (NMT)
    The principles of NMT involve (1) relieving ischemia (lack of blood flow) in muscles; (2) releasing trigger points; (3) relieving nerve entrapment; (4) evaluating postural distortion causing muscular imbalances; and (5) evaluating biomechanical dysfunction which leads to faulty movement patterns and increased intra-joint pressure. Proper rehabilitation of injured tissues involves (1) eliminating spasms in the tissues (therapy); (2) restoring proper biomechanics; (3) restoring flexibility to the tissues (stretching); (4) rebuilding strength in the injured tissues (exercise); and (5) building endurance (conditioning exercises). Neuromuscular therapy is used to treat back and neck injuries, whiplash, carpal tunnel syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome, headaches, and TMJ syndrome as well as sports and work injuries.
  • Lymphatic Drainage Therapy (LDT)
    This gentle, rhythmic work follows the pattern of lymphatic flow in the body. It is used in cases of reduced circulation, edema, pre-and post- surgically and post-trauma to reduce swelling and bruising. LDT is advantageous for the client suffering from fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue and has a detoxing effect on the body.
  • Shiatsu
    This ancient oriental modality, sometimes called acupressure, follows the same principles as acupuncture. It works to restore proper balance to the body with specific patterns of pressure made with the thumb, hand or elbow/forearm.
  • Chi Nei Tsang
    Like Shiatsu, Chi Nei Tsang comes to the west from China. It works by increasing blood flow and lymphatic circulation to the visceral organs and is used for clients suffering from PMS, constipation and sluggish liver or spleen.
